Avishka Fernando is a right-handed batsman from Sri Lanka who gained attention while representing St. Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa. Avishka showed remarkable skills with both power hitting ability. At a young age, Fernando was already making a impression in school cricket, scoring hundreds for his school’s first XI even before turning 14.
Fernando’s success continued at the national Under-19 level, where he became one of the school system’s most prolific batsmen. Fernando recorded more than 1000 runs in the 2015 season and was eventually selected for Sri Lanka’s age-group teams. In his second Youth ODI innings, he made an impressive century, scoring 127 from 103 balls against Australia Under 19s in 2014.
The actual turning point in his career came during the 2016 Under-19 World Cup when Fernando scored a crucial 95 from 96 balls in Sri Lanka’s victory over England in the quarter-final. Later that year, Avishka Fernando impressed further by hitting two consecutive hundreds against England in a bilateral series in England, contributing to Sri Lanka Under-19s’ whitewash of the opposition.
