Matheesha Pathirana Career:
Franchise Cricket: Matheesha Pathirana started his career as a bowler and was selected for the 2021 Sri Lanka Cricket Invitational team. He made his T20 debut on August 22, 2021 for SLC Greys. Prior to this debut, he was a part of Sri Lanka’s team for the U-19 Cricket World Cup 2020.
Matheesha Pathirana was signed by Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2022 and they won the IPL in 2023 with Matheesha picking 19 wickets. He then became the youngest foreign player to win an IPL trophy. He was referred to as Baby Malinga, for building his bowling action after Lasith Malinga.
In April 2022, He made his debut in the IPL against the Gujarat Titans. He took the wicket of Shubman Gill in the very first ball, becoming the first Sri Lankan to achieve that in IPL. Later he was signed by the Kandy Falcons in July 2022, for the Lanka Premier League, Third Edition.
International Cricket: Matheesha Pathirana was named in Sri Lanka’s T20 International (T20I) squad in May 2022, against Australia however could not play the series due to an injury. He was named in Sri Lanka’s T20I squad in August 2022, for the 2022 Asia Cup. Thus, he made his international debut on August 27, 2022 against Afghanistan.
Subsequently, he was named in the One Day International (ODI) and T20I squad against New Zealand for the Sri Lanka squad in March 2023. He made his ODI debut on June 2, 2023 against Afghanistan. He took the wicket of Rahmat Shah and claimed his maiden ODI wicket.
Sri Lanka announced their 15-member squad for the ICC ODI World Cup qualifier in June 2023 and selected Matheesha Pathirana in their line-up.
Matheesha Pathirana faced a significant setback during the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, as he suffered a shoulder injury that ultimately led to his withdrawal.
The Injury Incident: The shoulder niggle injury occurred during Sri Lanka Vs Pakistan Match in Hyderabad on October 10, 2023. Due to the severe injury, Pathirana was ruled out of the World Cup and Veteran all-rounder Angelo Mathews was named as his replacement.

Matheesha Pathirana attained his elementary education at Ranabima Royal College in Kandy, Sri Lanka. Matheesha also appeared in music examinations till class 6. He later applied multiple times for admission in St. Anthony’s College in Katugastota but could not attain the admission.
The Trinity College in Kandy had invited him to join them at the time. At the Trinity College he joined the Under-17 cricket team.
He also joined the Kettarama cricket academy where he polished his bowling skills under the coaching of Chamila Gamage. He was also offered an invitation to join Colombo School to enhance his bowling but the invitation was rejected by his father.
